Scholarships

Here at CMU, there are two scholarships available to incoming grad students. They are the John E. Warriner Scholarship and the John P. and Ann S. Jensen Scholarship (Department of English Language and Literature, “Scholarships and Competitions”). Below are some key points about each scholarship, including application instructions:

John E. Warriner Scholarship

Every year, several of these scholarships are awarded to students studying a range of disciplines in the humanities based upon financial need (Department of English Language and Literature, “Scholarships and Competitions”). The scholarship pays out $3,000 per student. To apply, contact the Dean’s office in Anspach Hall, room 106, or at (989) 774-3341 and CHSBS@cmich.edu (Department of English Language and Literature, Scholarships and Competitions). The scholarship is open to Juniors, Seniors, and Graduate Students beginning in the fall semester. Students must have a GPA of 3.25 or higher to qualify for this scholarship. The application deadline is mid-March, the spring semester before grad school (Department of English Language and Literature, Scholarships and Competitions).
Tip: the sooner you start figuring out how to get free money to pay for school, the less you will have to pay out of pocket.

John P. and Ann S. Jensen Scholarship

This scholarship is offered through the Mt. Pleasant Area Community Foundation Scholarship Program. Applicants must have demonstrated academic ability with a minimum 3.0 GPA as well as a declared major of architecture, interior design, music, art, or literature. Because this is a community-based scholarship, parents or guardians of the applicant must live in Isabella County. Similar to the previous scholarship, this scholarship is open to Juniors, Seniors, and new Graduate Students. Unlike the previous scholarship, there does not need to be a demonstrated financial need in order to be accepted for this scholarship. Individuals associated with the administrations of this scholarship aren’t eligible to apply for it. The application is available on the Mt. Pleasant Community Foundation website. The deadline to apply is January 31st of the spring semester prior to graduate school.  Applications should include a one-page essay that discusses the student’s educational plans and how those plans relate to the students career goals as well as discuss why the student feels they’re deserving of the scholarship. The application should also include two letters of recommendation, one of whom should be a faculty member familiar with the student's work. This year, 2016, the scholarship awarded $2000.
